Unit 1.1 - Written report on the range and types of creative and media activity in the South bank
I have visited South Bank and found it be a buzzing busy area with varies of opportunities in the Creative and Media sector. We as diploma students went to a trip We went straight to visit the Hayward Gallery, which was a great experience because of all the priceless arts in show. I took some photos of some of the arts in show. Hayward Gallery Is part of the South Bank Centre so on the way I saw loads of different shops regarding to arts and media. I always wanted to visit the Hayward Gallery and visiting it finally is like a dream come true. Its only the Hayward Gallery which caught my eye, it was also the street performances which was very attracting and you can stay around watching it all day. One of my favourite performances is a group of people playing different instruments and the instruments were from their culture. The Music can be heard from very far away and you can almost follow your ears. On the bank of the river there were loads of mini shows. There was a moving person statue which only moves when you put in money and they cant are fooled even though they are behind thick clothing and a mask. The street performances and all the creative and media places make South Bank a diverse and attractive place for the people who show interest in the Creative and Media Sector. There’s a bit init for the people who has come South Bank for Entertainment. The BFI IMAX holds the biggest screens in UK and they take 3D to the next level which is Polarized 3D.

Unit 1.3 - A personal critical response to the film “Despicable Me”

Despicable me or is it just me!!!
Walking towards the heart of South Bank at 15th of October 2010, passing many architects and amazing spectacular views. Hayward gallery caught my eye as I walked past as the sun was reflecting into my fragile eyes in a windy day; I thought this made my day. Walking down some couple of steps, entering a place of heaven. Walking through the glass door and stepping on the red carpet made me feel like a VIP. Buying the tickets just as I realised how expensive the ticket was. Glancing at the infrastructure of the IMAX gave me a tingling sensation. “Despicable me” is the film I went to watch in Polarized 3D on the biggest screen in Britain.
Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud were the imaginative directors of the film. The three hard working producers of the film “Despicable me” is John Cohen, Janet Healy and Chris Melandri. The main actor of this film was Steve Carell as Gru and Jason Segel as Vector (The enemy).
Gru, wanting to be the most wanted guy in the world has just met a younger match called Vector. Just as he adopts three little children from the orphan for his evil plan. He’s turned from a baddy to a daddy just as Vector is about to strike.
The plot of the film was very predictable because everyone knew that Gru was going to be changed by the three kids after Gru adopted them. This took away the suspense from the film and its very expected by the audience. Even all this is in the way; the film was filled up with great high definition animations and humour. Using minions made the film a bit unique because they were like an army of little beans called minions. The film is very exciting to watch with the exaggeration it shows.
The relationship with Gru and Professor, Professor was Gru’s sidekick and Professor was a bit loose in his head. For the three kids, Gru was a Foster dad and for Gru; the three little kids were part of a plan. For the minions’, Gru was their master and their saviour. This film was set in a cartoon world where everything’s possible. The animation that was showed was very clear and understandable, especially when it was in polarized 3D.
At the end, Gru realised the love that he had on the three little kids and then went back to get them from the orphan after he had shrunk the moon. Professor found out that, the bigger the object the faster it would grow back and the moon had a bigger mass. Vector plotting to steal the shrunk moon and when he gets the moon, he moon starts enlarging and Gru sent Vectors rocket into the sky with the moon and the moon went back to where it belongs.
I think that this film is not that good to watch at the IMAX cinema because the story was very expected and it doesn’t create any suspense. O my opinion, film’s that are very unexpected is good films. For the younger kids, it will be great film because the animation is more than emotional especially with the Polarized 3D Effect. I don feel empathy for the characters because I happen to think it’s only a cartoon and that emotion doesn’t come from the heart. This film might feel emotion for little kids but for the older mature audience, its like teletubbies. Its just a little bit worth watching because of the 3D effect at Imax but I don’t think its even worth playing the movie at the Imax.

Unit 1.4 - Research for Creating a Guide to the Creative and Media Scene in the Southbank
This is a poster I was inspired by because of the abstract effect that they have used in the leaflet, I decided to do the same thing for mine with the pictures that I manipulated. I also liked the paint splatter effect that they have used because I believed that it created a sympathy to the leaflet. I decided to add in a paint splatter on the corners of my leaflet to liven things up but this time the paint splatter brush effect is used in different colours to represent happiness and joy at South bank.
This is a leaflet from the I MAX Company. I like the simplicity of this leaflet because its really eye catching and how they have used the varies of pictures for one film. The colours that they have used are very effective and standing out from the rest. I like the way they have kept a simple background and not worked with it on photo shop. They not only talked about one films that's a really hit at the I MAX. Thye have talked about the other films that are showing at the I Max. They also added a map at the back who i really liked and I decided I was going to do the same thing for my leaflet.

Unit 1.4 - Draft for my leaflet
This is my draft for which I made it better on photoshop. This is the plan, I started with and as you can see that its not identical to the real front cover of the leaflet. You can also see that, Im not a great artist either but I knew what i was going to do when i start using photoshop. Some of the changes I have made are that I have replaced the leaves on the top left hand corner with paint splatter which was obviously a better idea than leaves because SouthBank is more to do with art than anything else.
This is the draft for my middle bit of my leaflet. As you can see that I have written what I was going to write, when I do it on photoshop. As you can see that I have drawn a picture of a colleague of mine who came along on a trip with me. I was going through the pictures, I found this picture and i decided to use it. I also wanted my colleague blue to give it some uniqueness. On the other side, I drew "SHOWS..." in bubble writing, coloured in blue. On the Bottom right hand corner, I wanted to have a brush effect on the side to liven things up.
This is my back cover, I wanted my back cover to look very different from the others because than it will look very boring for the audience. The box on the bottom left hand corner is a map of SouthBank and next to it is the website which I have decided to place on the bottom right hand corner. I also decided to input events thats taking place at "Tate Modern" and "Hayward Gallery". I had a brilliant plan for my title "Events" and I decided to stick with it.

Unit 1.4 - Poster
This is my poster that I have created on photo shop using the same picture which is on the leaflet cover so that it creates similarity between my poster and the leaflet. I used the picture which was manipulated on photo shop which I copied from the leaflet for the reasons above. I made a new slogan for my poster which states "Technology in its best form". At the background, I have added these faded in coloured boxes to create effect on the poster making it stand out. The three main colors are blue, red and green. I have used Red to represent Love and passion. Black to represent power and control, and the Green to represnt Eco-city. I have added this picture of a soundwave from Google images to represent the passion for music that Southbank has. I also added brushes in the poster to make the poster more vibrant and to make it gleam wherever it was. I also decided to place the slogan "Technology in its best form" because in the picture, my colleagues holding a camera representing technology. The font I used to write the text "Welcome to South bank" was a flowery font which I downloaded from the website.Learning Log - 10/12/10

Unit 1.4 - Stages (Middle)

1. In the middle part of my leaflet, I have decided to keep the same layout. As you can see that, I have added the Text “IMAX “on the right hand page and “SHOWS…” on the left page. I have kept the same splatter brushes but it’s a bit small and I also have this beautiful design on the top right hand corner which shows uniqueness.

2. The next stage, I have decided to add in the show which was taking place at the IMAX. I have decided to talk about Harry Potter, Avatar and Tron. After print screening the picture that the IMAX website used, I had to use another picture which I am allowed to. I went looking for pictures that features each film on Google images.

3. On the third stage, I decided to add information about the shows that’s taking place. I have included why the public should especially watch the film at the IMAX and not at any other cinema. I have used descriptive words and linguistic devices to grab in the reader.

4. Since I haven’t included information about the IMAX, I have been told by my teacher to do so. I have used the same font as my sub heading. I have used a blue outline with the font being black. I have talked about the location and I also stated some facts about the IMAX.

5. To finish things of, I have added a picture I took of my colleague on the trip. I have manipulated the picture to give it some special effect. I cut out the background using a tool called the extract tool and this tool cuts out the background after you have highlighted the bits you want to keep. The effect on the edges is the side effect of the extract tool but that effect was very unique and different. I have also added this beautiful Photoshop brush effect on the bottom to give it some liven up to the middle page of the leaflet.

Unit 1.4 - Stages (Back)

4. On the fourth stage, I have added the title “Events”, on the top with an effect which really stands out. I have written down “EVE” on one line and “ENTS” on a different line to give it some uniqueness. I also added these fantastic brushes which really bring up the effect of the whole leaflet are called abstract brushes. I download my brushes for free on a website called “King Brushes”.

5. On the fifth stage of my back leaflet, I manipulated a picture of a street artist which I took personally. I used a tool called the extract and what that’s used for is to cut the background off perfectly after you have lighted the bits that you want to keep. It leaves an effect on the edge of the photo which I really like. On the bottom the page, I have attached the website where people can visit and gain more knowledge of South bank.

6. On the finishing stage of my back leaflet, I decided to add in a map on the bottom right hand corner of the leaflet to give it some effects and I also added in some of the pictures that the street artist drew on the streets to bring some life in the leaflet.

Unit 1.4 - Stages (Front)

Unit 1.4 - Outcome
This is my final brochure which I created for my unit, I’m really proud of this leaflet because it looks very eye catching and very professional. I really like the picture that I used in this brochure because it’s really unique and it represents the technology that’s been used in Southbank, representing the modern years. I have made the picture in a blue tinted saturation because I believed that it will suit the colour schemes in my brochure and flow very well with the picture I used of the IMAX.The picture that I used in the front part of the poster shows the IMAX when the new harry potter was being advertise around the building. The colour schemes that it consisted were blue and black, which flows very well with he rest of my brochure. I have decided to place the IMAX image in the bottom left hand corner of the brochure and its only be shown the half.
The font I used was very up to date and modern. I have added a blue stroke around the title to show professionalism. I also added the date just underneath the title but it’s a bit smaller and this time, I the text was in blue and it had a white stroke. I have done that because it shows some difference between the title and the date. The colour of the text of the date is different shade of blue from the others so that it stands out on the page.
I have also used some brushes around the front to make my brochure very unique and stand out on the page. I have added a brush effect of a paint splash on the top left hand corner of brochure so that it would represent the art that takes place in the Southbank and how Southbank has a good relationship with art because of galleries like the Hayward gallery. I also added a brush effect of a honey comb on the top right hand corner of the brochure to show to bring out the uniqueness of the brochure.
I could have added more images on the front of my leaflet however it would look crowded and it would loose its professionalism. Some say that it looks much better just and plain and simple however some say that it looks much better with some more images at the front. Some have even gone into further details and said that I could add in a picture of a girl with the same pose, then it would show some uniqueness, also look very professional.
Middle
In the middle part, I have decided that I was going to keep the paint splash brush effect on the right hand effect and also the honey comb brush effect on the second page on the left. Both of these are going to be constant through out my whole of my brochure. I have been inspired by some brochure that are out there who keep one or two things constant through out the brochure.
I have added another picture at the bottom left of the brochure which is pretty similar to the picture at the front because I have added the same saturation and also the same person. I really though t that keeping the same person through out the poster would be really sensible thing to do. This time the person in the picture is looking up showing some expectations from Southbank which he gains. I have put the picture at the bottom and the person is looking up shows that he is looking up at the text and everything else.
On the first page, I have added the title as the IMAX because I thought that the IMAX was in the heart of Southbank and also the most important. I have written some few words about the IMAX and how it came about. On the second page, I have added the title as “Shows…” and the three dots show that there’s more. On that page, I have written about three shows that’s taking pace at the IMAX Cinema and also attached a picture next to it.
At the bottom right hand corner of the second page, I have added in some more brush effect which really modern and “Tronny”. Because one of my shows was Tron and on that page, I thought it would be really eye catching if I added in some brush effects on the same page. Most of my colleagues said that it was really good and it creates a vibrant feel for that brochure.
Back
At the back, I wanted it to be different from the others and I have done that by changing the background from black to white which means that my brochure at the back is much more unique. My title is events and the title font is different from the others because I wanted it to look very unique. I have decided that it would align with the underline underneath it and also use a different font. However I added the same font at the top left hand corner saying “more to offer…” I also have two subtitles for both of the two galleries; I have done that so that people don’t get confused when they look at my brochure.
At my back ground I have added some different striped all going the same direction and all of them are slanted. They are all different lengths as well. This creates a vibrant feel to the end bit of the brochure. I have these two boxes, one is read and the other one is blue and I have bought the opacity of it down and I have used that to show differentiate the Hayward Gallery and the Tate Modern. I have added some small pictures of the different events that I chose to advertise. At the bottom, I have attached a picture of a map of Southbank to show where everything is.
On the bottom left hand corner of the page, I have attached a picture of street artists who creates art on the streets. That picture was taken by me and I edited that photo a little bit so that it goes very well with my other pictures in the brochure. I also thought that it would make my back page look much better if I added in some brush effects because I believed that it would create some fluency in the back page of the brochure. I added in some brush effects which consisted of claws which goes from one corner to another.

Evaluation - 21/01/11
Awareness of the target audience
The South Bank Marketing Group manages Southbanklondon.com and it is a consortium of local attractions and hotels dedicated to promoting the South Bank as London's top visitor destination. I made sure that I use bold typography so it will eye catch the reader so that my leaflet relates to these target audiences. In addition, I have used various of vibrant colours and montage. This has made a big impact on the design which eye catches the audience. Furthermore, I have used various images such as every day people and buildings of the South Bank which relates to the audience.
